Title: Greyed out hosting buttons?
Post by: hibernated on May 27, 2012, 06:31:23 PM
Hi all.

I'm just trying out this software and it all seems great but I'm a bit confused about hosting games.

I can host through the proxy server and I have everything set up for hosting without proxy (ports, etc.) but when I open the hosting dialogue in Lackey 'Use proxy server?' is greyed out ticked so I can't turn it off. 'Advertise your game on the server' and 'Test if you can host without proxy' are also grey and unclickable.

I've looked through all the tutorials and stickies and done a forum search but I can't find any mention of the problem. I'd like to host internally and also just not have to rely on the proxy so I need to get it working.

Any clues? xD

If it won't let you host a normal game, it is because your networking setup doesn't allow you to. If you think the result it gave you is not accurate, send me a message and I can help you test. People often forget about things, like one of their multiple firewalls. If you want to host a normal game on your LAN, you can have someone directly connect by your LAN IP.
If you are sure you can host, you should be able to override the proxy need test. You shouldn't need to, but if this is a problem, please contact me and I can see if something is bugged.

Hey, cheers for the reply.

Ok, I will try the override next time me and my mate are both online. If it doesn't work I'll know I've missed something (though I don't see what I could've missed, I've hosted things before from here  ???). When I want to use LAN do I just use the override and put my internal IP?

Is the test connection button meant to be greyed out though, or is it a bug? I'm not sure how to let Lackey know I've changed any ports, firewalls etc. if the test connection button is unclickable. :s

Big applause on the software btw, it really is brilliant even if I'm not sure what I'm doing with this bit.

Cheers,

The button should be greyed out while a test is already in progress, and you also aren't allowed to perform tests one right after another. I think you need to 50 seconds before performing another.

The host of a game never needs to enter in their IP address, even if they are on a LAN. It is shown only so it's easier to tell people who would connect to you. The only thing you can change as the host is the port on which you are hosting, but there is seldom reason to do that, and it would also need to be entered by people who would connect to you.
If you are connecting via LAN, you might just want to bypass the server entirely and just direct connect.

Lackey doesn't need to know if you have change ports or disabled your firewall. You can always run a new proxy need test to check if you have disabled what you need to. But if you have things working and you know you do, you can always just host (overriding the suggestion if needed). If the proxy need test is giving you an inaccurate report, that is a bug and I want to be aware of that, so please allow me to do some testing with you if that is the case.

The proxy need test essentially has you host and sees if one of my external computers can connect to you. If it can, then you can host fine. Otherwise, no one will be able to connect to you either. Note that all of this only applies to WAN connections. You may still be able to host for people on your LAN.

Hey again, just so you know you have nothing to worry about - I was getting a false positive from my port checker, having tried a few others I'm pretty sure my port forwarding isn't working. Not sure why though... I'm gonna try and sort it out with my ISP (who also provided the router so should know what to do with it) tomorrow.

Anyway, cheers for the help (and Lackey) - I'll be sure to let you know if I do find any bugs.  ;D
