Modal creation basics

I know you?ve had forum problems and it was probably lost then but how do I go about making a modal?
Its tempting to just dive in and start messing around in word pad, but is there anything I should know first.

Tokimo - careful recommending that page.  The plugininfo information is out-of-date.  Might be better if we posted something here.
